Shaping Tomorrow: A Personal Reflection On The National Forum On Youth, Elections, and Democratization

I had the privilege of participating in The National Forum on Youth, Elections, and Democratization on December 17, 2023, in Mogadishu. This event, a collaborative effort by The Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA), UNFPA, and MOYS, was a crucial step in enhancing youth engage- ment and shaping Somalia’s democratic future.

One of the standout moments during the forum was the high-level panel discussion on youth political participa- tion. The distinguished participants brought valuable insights, sparking meaningful conversations about the role of young people in shaping the political landscape beyond national elections.

What made the forum truly impactful was the active involvement of Somali youth. They took center stage in leading the program, presenting findings, and sharing recommendations that emerged from this insightful process. This not only showcased the capacity of the youth as contributors but also highlighted their commitment to actively participate in the democratic process.

The event was attended by various people, including members of the government, as well as the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Honourable Catriona Laing, and the Ambassador to the European Union, Honourable Karin Johansson. Their valuable insights enriched the discourse, adding depth to the conversation. In conclusion, my participation in The National Forum on Youth, Elections, and Democratization was a valuable experience. The event successfully brought together diverse stakeholders to discuss and strategize on youth political engagement, emphasizing the critical role young people play in shaping the future of Somalia’s democracy.
